Pyrex was first produced in 1908 in the United States. It was more resistant to thermal shock than other glasses.
Today, however, the production process has changed. Where borosilicate glass was used, today soda lime is used and the product is not as strong.
Current Pyrex dishes are not resistant to thermal shock. Therefore, they would break if moved from one extreme temperature to another.
However, as with normal cooking, you can use Pyrex dishes.
Can you put Pyrex cookware in the oven?
The short answer is yes. You can put pyrex glass in the oven and use it for cooking, baking, etc.
However, you must remember that it is a bad idea to put pyrex on your cooktop. You should also not move the pyrexpan from one temperature extreme to another.
This is thermal shock and the pan will most likely break.
Pyrex temperature capability
As a general rule, you should only heat the pyrexpan or baking dish to about 400-450 F.
Anything higher than that can seriously damage its structural integrity.
Your Pyrex dish has limits. Remember that you can only move it from the refrigerator to the freezer and the oven at long intervals.
Additionally, here are some limitations of pyrex you should be aware of.
- Preheat your oven before placing Pyrex dishes in it. Prolonged exposure to heat should be kept to a minimum.

Check the warranty that comes with your Pyrex pan or bowl. There are usually clauses you can use to replace dishes or pans that have been broken by the heat of the oven.
As a precaution, you should probably check this warranty before purchasing the dish.
- If you cook with pyrex, be sure to wear closed shoes. This ensures that no glass gets into your feet or cuts your feet if it breaks.
- Also wear thick gloves when cleaning the glass. It protects your hands.
- Be careful when picking up broken shards. Small shards can get into your eyes or cut your skin.
- Throw away any food that was in the Pyrex dish when it broke. Small shards can become lodged in food. Cleaning food from splinters is useless. Every little piece of glass that enters your body is not worth the most delicious food in the world.

Alternatives to Pyrex

Frying pans can work the same way as pyrex glass dishes. If the pan is deep enough and the lid closes well.

Clay pots work the same way as any small oven when it comes to heating. Therefore, they can do the same job as a Pyrex dish.

The design of the clay pot lid allows steam to rise while the dish is being prepared.
The humidity then condenses on the lid and then goes down again. This is called using the principle of convection to your advantage.
Today, terracotta pots are made glazed, so great care should be taken when choosing a heat source. An open fire is not a good source of heat. However, an oven is.
Metal jars are a great alternative to glass pyrexpan. They can absorb heat much faster and retain heat much longer than pyrexpans.
However, always read the instructions on how much heat they can handle. This can vary greatly when it comes to the manufacturer.
A ceramic pot is perfect for cooking soups and stews.
However, it cannot really replace cooking utensils. It can handle things like melting chocolate and mixing different ingredients over low heat.
A soup pot with a tight lid is an excellent replacement for a pyrexpan. You can cook, sear and cook in it if you want.
Just do it over low heat to avoid sticking. You will need to use low heat and check the fluid level regularly.
For cooking, you can use the same techniques that apply when using a pyrexpan.
The soup pot works the same way as a soup pot.
Remember that you have to adapt a little to different recipes.
Braisers can cook almost anything fried or baked. The main difference is that the circumference of the sides of the pots are very different.
If you have a braiser, you can adapt the recipes with a little ingenuity.
Frying pans are great for baking or searing if desired. You can also cook different things in it if you need. You can also cook a roast in the oven on a skillet.
