The airfryer is rightly the computing device of the 21st century. It can do everything from frying food without using large amounts of oil to reheating frozen food.
While it’s tempting to use your air fryer for everything because it’s such a handy piece of equipment, you’re probably concerned about safety. After all, you already know that not all food is microwaveable, so it’s safe to assume that there are likely restrictions on using your air fryer as well.
One of the most common questions air fryer owners have is whether silicone molds are safe to use in the air fryer. Using the air fryer is the perfect cooking trick if you don’t feel like turning on the oven, but is it safe to use cooking items like silicone molds in the air fryer ?
Here you will find everything you need to know about silicone molds and the airfryer.
What are silicone molds used for?
Silicone molds, despite their name, aren’t just used for molding and shaping baked goods. Many bakers like to use them to replace baking sheets and pans.
Silicone molds are cooking equipment made from silicone rubber, a flexible artificial material that is a polymer similar to plastic. You can get silicone molds in all colors, from neutrals to colorful neon hues.
They also come in many different shapes, from regular loaf pans and muffin trays to non-traditional baking shapes like butterflies, cars, and more. Many bakers like to use silicone molds to turn candies or desserts into funky shapes, especially for kids.
Silicone molds have some advantages over traditional metal bakeware. They are non-stick and often easier to maneuver. However, since they are flexible and bendable, it’s easy to accidentally spill your dough when you put them in the oven!
Can silicone molds be used in the Airfryer?
One of the hidden benefits of the air fryer is that it makes cooking so much easier. As long as you adjust the temperature and time, you can bake in the air fryer without waiting for the oven to preheat.
The good news is that you can use silicone molds in the airfryer. This means that you can make all the cookies and cupcakes you want in your airfryer without any problem!
Why is it safe?
Silicone oven safe molds can withstand temperatures up to 440 degrees Fahrenheit. The hottest an airfryer usually gets is in between 325 and 400 degrees Fahrenheit, so much cooler than the oven. If your silicone molds can withstand the oven, they are safe to use in an air fryer.
Silicone cookware is generally safe to use, although it is a newer material than metal or pottery. Silicone molds and pans are FDA certified to withstand heating and cooling without leaching dangerous chemicals that can end up in your food, a common problem with plastic canisters.
Before placing your silicone mold or cooking utensils in an air fryer, make sure they are oven safe. Anything made of silicone cannot withstand high temperatures because silicone molds are made with a special heat-resistant polymer. This means that you should not put random silicone objects in your airfryer!
What if you don’t have silicone molds?
If you don’t have silicone molds, you can still use your air fryer to make baked goods. Other materials that are suitable for the airfryer are glass, metal and steel. Bowls and pans made of these materials can be used in the air fryer as well as in the oven.
If you’re reheating frozen entrees or baking mozzarella sticks, you might not want to mess up an entire cookie sheet (or if you don’t have one on hand). The advantage of airfryers is that they are even safe for disposable materials.
You can wrap your food in foil or even parchment paper to heat it up in an air fryer. It’s better for reheating frozen foods or meals, not for trying to bake cookies. When using aluminum foil or parchment paper, also make sure that it does not block any heating elements or air ducts.
Tips for using silicone molds
If you’re using silicone molds in your air fryer, there are a few things to keep in mind.
Shake the mussels
The only downside of silicone molds compared to other bakeware is that they cook food unevenly. This is especially a problem with an air fryer, which is more compact.
To avoid this problem, take the mussels out halfway through cooking, shake them and turn them over. This ensures that all sides of your food have equal access to the heat source and that you don’t end up with a raw, burnt patchwork cake.
Do not overfill the silicone
The other disadvantage of silicone molds compared to metal or glass baking sheets is that they are sometimes a little too flexible. This means that if you’re not careful, the pan could bend when you put it in the oven or deep fryer and your batter could spill out.
The best way to avoid spills, other than caution, is to make sure you don’t overfill your molds. It also gives your baked goods plenty of room to rise and prevents different items from sticking together.
Use the pan for frying
You can also use a silicone mold if you are not baking. A silicone pot or basket is perfect for holding the foods you’re trying to fry, from chicken nuggets to French fries.
Using a silicone baking pan for frying is more environmentally friendly than parchment paper and makes cleaning up after frying easier because you don’t have to clean the airfryer basket yourself.
You can even have silicone molds installed specifically for air fryers.
Regularly clean your molds
Just because food doesn’t stick to silicone as easily as other materials doesn’t mean you can get away with not washing your molds regularly. You still want to get rid of accumulated fat.
Wash your silicone molds with warm water and regular dish soap. Most silicone molds are also dishwasher safe for your convenience.
Silicone molds and the Airfryer
The good news is that you can use silicone molds in a deep fryer without any problems. As long as you choose oven-safe, food-grade silicone molds, they are designed to withstand higher temperatures than your air fryer can produce.
Silicone molds are completely safe to use as they do not bleed or bleed hazardous materials into food at hot or cold temperatures. Use them to bake cupcakes or cookies in your air fryer, reheat frozen foods, or even bake chicken nuggets.
For best results, shake your silicone molds halfway through cooking for even cooking time. Also make sure not to overfill the molds and wash them regularly.
Cooking in an air fryer is best if you’re in a hurry because you don’t have to wait for the oven to preheat. Use your silicone molds for convenience.
