Why omega-3 fatty acids from krill oil are healthy for you

Furthermore, certain dietary supplements can have a positive effect on the human organism. Omega-3 fatty acids play an important role and fulfill essential functions, but the body cannot produce them itself. Therefore, alpha linolenic acid ALA, docosahexaenoic acid DHS and eucosapentaenoic acid EPA must be supplied to the organism with food or a dietary supplement. So far, this has been done by taking fish oil.

What are the unsaturated acids good for?

Omega-3 fatty acids can have an extremely positive effect on blood values ​​- especially when it comes to cholesterol and triglyceride levels. In this way, they should reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. In a 2008 edition, the German Society for Nutrition recommends the daily consumption of 250 milligrams of EPA and DHS. This has been recommended in connection with the prevention of coronary disease and prevention of heart attacks.

Of course, this claim only holds true when omega-3 fatty acids are combined with a balanced diet – people with heart problems should seek full medical advice so that a complete nutritional program is put in place. Even healthy pregnant women and parents should always seek advice – the doctor can best assess the daily consumption in each individual case.

Where are omega-3 fatty acids found?

Omega-3 fatty acids can be of plant or animal origin. The three most active omega-3 fatty acids are ALA, DHA and EPA. ALA is found, for example, in linseed oil, chia oil and rapeseed oil – this acid has a positive effect on the bones in particular. DHA and EPA regulate blood levels and are found in fish such as Atlantic salmon and Atlantic herring, Pacific sardines and European anchovies.

It was recently discovered in the USA that a shrimp-like crustacean in Antarctica also contains omega-3 fatty acids: krill. It forms the largest biomass in the world and is caught only in the pure waters of the continent.

What does the new krill oil offer?

It has long been known that fish oil is rich in omega-3 fatty acids. But krill oil is also quickly gaining new supporters – in any case, supporters of krill oil cite as a pro-argument that it contains phosphides, which ensure particularly good absorption of fatty acids. Krill oil can also be dispersed and therefore does not burden the digestive tract. The naturally contained astaxanthin ensures good stability of omega-3 until ingestion.

Maybe that’s why many manufacturers are bringing new products with krill oil onto the market.
